Ramon Llull Lectures (dr. Coralba Colomba)

Ramon Llull: Philosopher of Dialogue (within the course of Dr.Tropia „Philosophizing in the Middle Ages“)

Ramon Llull and the Vernacular Philosophy of His Day

The Vernacular philosophy as subject matter has been introduced in the medieval philosophical historiography quite recently by Ruedi Imbach (1989), then developed by Alain De Libera (1991) and Loris Sturlese (1990), paying attention on the one hand to the translations of philosophical works into vernacular languages, and on the other hand to the rising of a brand new philosophical production in these vernacular languages. After a brief introduction about the characteristics and contents of vernacular philosophy and the role of the “laymen” in the history of medieval philosophy, I am going to devote the second and more extensive part of my lecture to Ramon Llull, certainly one of the most prolific laic authors of the Middle Ages, for the extraordinary largeness of his corpus (about 280 works) but especially for the novelty and innovation of language and contents. My aim is to show how the Catalan author used different style and genre in his vernacular and Latin writings, in order to reply to the knowing demands of a fresh audience, different from the ecclesiastic community of the magnificent cathedrals of the knowledge (universities and studia) which talked, wrote and read exclusively in Latin.
